SaskFirst Female Summer Camps Open in Wilcox
The Saskatchewan Hockey Association (SHA) is set for the next phase of its SaskFirst High Performance Program as the Female U16 and U18 Summer Camps are set to begin today (Wednesday July 26) at Athol Murray College of Notre Dame in Wilcox.
The Female U18 Camp will feature the top 42 players from across the province who will be striving to make the cut, get an invite to the fall camp, and ultimately be selected to be a part of the 2017 edition of the U18 Female Team Saskatchewan. This year that team will travel to Quebec City to compete at the National Women’s U18 Championship in early November.
Over the course of the five day summer camp the players will have not only their on-ice abilities tested, but will undergo off-ice evaluation and interviews as well as fitness testing. In the end, the players selected to move on to the next phase of this elite program must not only be good hockey players but good people. All those who will be attending know that they will be evaluated based on their hockey IQ, skills, ability and competitive level as well as their intensity, character, and attitude. The SHA believes that all Team Saskatchewan players must be elite in all aspects, which includes both on and off the ice.
The Female U16 Program is in its third year and was created to offer more development opportunities for young female players across the province in their specific age groups. The summer camp will feature 42 players at the U16 level and after there will 20 players selected to compete in a tournament in Swift Current September 7-10th.
The Female SaskFirst High Performance Program begins every February with regional camps held across the province and are open to all players in the U16 and U18 categories. From there, the top players are invited to take place in the SaskFirst Tournament held in April at which time the top 42 are chosen to attend the upcoming summer camp. The process ensures all players not only have the opportunity to compete with their peers, but receive significant exposure as all SaskFirst events are highly attended by scouts from a variety of elite leagues. In addition, the SaskFirst Program is a gateway to Hockey Canada’s Female High Performance Program which includes their National Teams.
The SHA created this elite SaskFirst Program to ensure not only players, but coaches and officials all receive ample opportunity for development both on and off the ice. The SaskFirst Program is unique as no other provincial branches offer such as in depth developmental program for athletes, coaches and officials. It remains the mission of the SHA to Lead, promote and develop positive hockey experiences across the entire Province of Saskatchewan.
The Female U18 Fall Camp will take place September 21st – 23rd when the players will compete in the Mandi Schwartz Challenge in Regina against CIS schools including the University of Regina Cougars which will help prepare the team for the national competition in November in Quebec City.
