SaskFirst Female Under-18 Program Cancelled Following Hockey Canada Announcement
Thursday, September 3, 2020 - The Saskatchewan Hockey Association (SHA) and SaskFirst high-performance program has announced the cancellation of the 2020 Female Under-18 program which was expected to compete at the National Women’s Under-18 Championships this November. Earlier today, Hockey Canada announced the cancellation of several events including the NWU-18’s. Had the competition gone ahead as scheduled, the top 29 players were expected to meet up in Lumsden on September 20th for a fall camp before final roster selections were made. Without any competition on the calendar, the upcoming fall camp has now been cancelled.
“This is a disappointing time for these young athletes who have trained hard to get to this point. We understand this decision was made in the best interest of safety, but you can’t help but feel bad for these players who miss out on a great opportunity.”
- Joel Houseman, Senior Coordinator of High-Performance
The SaskFirst program is going ahead with scheduling camps and tournaments for the 2020-21 season but will await further confirmation from the Saskatchewan Government if and when these events can take place due to ongoing concerns over Covid-19. The SaskFirst Program was introduced by the Saskatchewan Hockey Association (SHA) in 1988 and since that time the program has brought great pride and accomplishment within our province. The SaskFirst Program was designed to provide a better understanding of the game as well as to promote the development of quality players, coaches, trainers and officials. The participants are enriched as individuals and can achieve self-satisfaction and enjoyment as part of the hockey community.
