SaskFirst Male Midget Tournament Kicks Off This Weekend
Thursday, April 18, 2019 - The Saskatchewan Hockey Association (SHA) is gearing up for the final SaskFirst provincial tournament of the season. This weekend, we welcome the SaskFirst Midget Tournament which will take place this weekend at the Co-operators Centre in Regina.
A total of eight (8) teams comprised of Midget aged players were selected to take part from Regional Camps which took place in February. The competition begin on April 19 and the teams will take part in the three-day tournament. The players and coaches will arrive on Thursday (April 18) afternoon for team practices and a presentation from the SHA and the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.
The Midget SaskFirst Program is open to all midget aged players who are not registered with a Midget AAA, Junior A, B, or C Team. The tournament allows the players to be recognized and also offers the potential to go onto play high levels of hockey as scouts and representatives from a variety of leagues will be in attendance. Notable players who have gone through the Midget SaskFirst Program include Regina’s Tyler Bozak (Toronto Maple Leafs), Kindersley’s Derek Dorsett (Vancouver Canucks) and Conner Ingram (Kamloops Blazers).
The tournament is also held as part of the Saskatchewan Development Model (SDM) – a partnership the SHA developed with the Western Hockey League (WHL), Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) and Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League (SMAAAHL) to create an athlete focused development program.
The SaskFirst High Performance Program begins every February with regional camps held in the north and south regions of the province and are open to all players in the Midget category. From there, the top players are invited to take place in the SaskFirst Tournament held every April. The process ensures all players have the opportunity to compete with their peers, while receiving significant exposure at all SaskFirst events.
