SHA Officials 2020-21 Season Update

August 14, 2020

Memo

To:          SHA Officials

From:    SHA Officiating Development Program

I hope your extended off-seasons have been going well and everyone has been enjoying their summer break. The SHA Officiating Development Program wanted to give an update for officials as to what next season may look like at this point.

First of all, typically official registration opens in mid-to late August but with the expected delay to playing hockey games, we are aiming for mid-September at the earliest to open the registration. The process for clinics will be a bit different this season, then in the past based on some of the restrictions and challenges with COVID-19.

The plan will be to again have all officials register online, which will open through the Saskatchewan Hockey Association website at this link: https://sha.sk.ca/officials/officials-registration. Following the registration, junior officials ages 14 and under will complete the Hockey Canada online modules. Officials ages 15 and over will complete the modules that the SHA has created, as well as complete the exam. Following the online modules officials will be required to attend a webinar. Finally, we may have on-ice session for junior officials once we get closer to the start of the season based on the Sask. Health Authoritie’s recommendations for the number of participants we can have on the ice. Please understand, as things continue to change adjustments to our plan may continue to change but we will do our best to update the SHA website and social media accounts to keep everyone informed.

The SHA released a memorandum earlier this week with an update regarding the Return to Hockey and continue with communication with Hockey Canada and the Sask. Health Authority. At this point, there is no set date for when games can start and when officials will be required. This will likely become clearer after students return to school and there has been time to assess how the province is handling the COVID-19 situation at that time.

We appreciate that officials are eager to return to the ice and get certified for the season, but the plan is to make the certification process as relevant with the most recent information possible and as close to the start of games being played as possible to ensure everyone is prepared and ready for the season while safety precautions are being discussed.

A few other notes for officials: Senior officials will again require an approved Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check prior to officiating any games. You can check your Hockey Canada profile to see when your checks expires (Note - they are valid for 3 years from the date they were issued). Also note that official who plan to work in CanadaWest, SJHL, PJHL and SMAAAHL games this season will be required to complete the standard fitness testing. Dates will be scheduled for those tests and a deadline will be set at a later date. Finally, officials who were registered last season are certified to work games until December 7, 2020. However, priority for assignments will be given to those officials who have recertified for this season.

Thanks, for your understanding as we work these challenging times and we hope to see you on the ice in the future. If you have any additional questions you can email TrentC@sha.sk.ca.
