Re:         Sask Female Development Model

September 17, 2018

The Memo below was sent to the SHA Membership on May 4, 2018.

This Memorandum is a reminder that the October 1st deadline is fast approaching for all Minor Hockey Associations who wish to be considered for the following Female Hockey Divisions in the 2019/20 season and beyond;

  • Female Midget AAA
  • Female Midget AA
  • Female Bantam AA

All applications must be forwarded to the SHA Office in care of the General Manager.

Based upon feedback from the membership who attended recently held Zone Meetings throughout the Province, the SHA Board of Directors have approved the recommendation of the SHA Male/Female Development Committee to create the Sask Female Development Model and the restructuring of Female Hockey at the Bantam and Midget Level in the Province. The proposal would be that this would come into effect in the 2019/20 season.

The Restructuring is as follows;

  • A standardized province wide system of hockey that provides the opportunity for female players to develop and progress from Grassroots hockey through to Elite hockey and higher.
  • Defined criteria determining the appropriate number of teams within each Category of Midget AAA, Midget AA and Bantam AA. The number of teams listed below Midget AAA will be determined based on applications and Registration numbers.
  • For the past number of years there has been anywhere from 17/18 to 25/30 Bantam aged players registered on Midget AAA Teams. The Model will provide a Bantam environment that includes all Bantam aged only players through the creation a Provincial League for those top-level Bantams, it results in the elimination of one team at the Midget AAA level. Bantam aged players will only be able to tryout and register for Midget hockey at the AAA Level and only through approval within a proposed Accelerated player application process.
  • Players playing in their age appropriate Divisions.
  • A Committee of the SHA will select the communities based upon the criteria listed below and an examination of Female Registration numbers throughout the Province at all ages of hockey to ensure the sustainability of AAA/AA programming.
  • The vision is to one day include the Pee Wee division within the Model.

To be considered for “Exceptional Player” status, applications must be submitted to the SHA Registration Committee on or before July 1. (Beginning in 2019)

  1. Applicants must fill out, in its entirety, the SFDM Player Acceleration Application Package and provide all necessary documentation requested;
  2. Applications will be evaluated by the SHA Registration Committee, in consultation with Sask First program staff.
  3. No underage players will be granted the opportunity to a second tryout at the Midget AAA Division;
  4. Decisions will be communicated to the player and applicable Host MHA in writing on or before August 1.
