Team Saskatchewan Rosters Announced for Canada Winter Games
Monday, December 10, 2018 - The Saskatchewan Hockey Association is excited to introduce the rosters for the Female Under-18 and Male Under-16 programs. Those chosen will represent Team Saskatchewan at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, AB.
Team Saskatchewan on the Women’s side will include ten returning players from the 2017 National Women’s Under-18 Tournament. Those players include Allison Hayhurst (Wapella), Grace Tam (Saskatoon), Kate Ball (Saskatoon), Kennedy Bobyck (Regina), Joelle Fiala (Clavet), Kaitlin Jockims (Saskatoon), Anna Leschyshyn (Grasswood), Taylor Lind (Shaunavon), Jayda Sachs (Warman) and Grace Shirley (Saskatoon). Shirley was recently named to the Team Canada Women’s U18 team heading to the IIHF Women’s U18 World Championships this January.
Team staff for the Female Under 18 team is Joel Houseman (Director of Operations), Terry Pavely (Head Coach), Greg Slobodzian (Assistant Coach), Tegan Schroeder (Assistant Coach), Jean Fauchon (Video Coach), Blaine Stork (Head Scout), Kacey Moffat (Athletic Therapist) and Josh Houseman (Equipment Manager).
Women’s Ice Hockey was first introduced at the 1991 Canada Winter Game in Charlottetown, P.E.I.. Since its inception, Team Saskatchewan has always represented. Two (2) medals have been claimed by the green and gold, the first being Silver in 1995 and the second being Bronze in 2003. Most recently, Saskatchewan’s Female Hockey program finished 4th place at the 2015 Canada Winter Games.
The player roster will feature an entirely new squad from the 2017 Team Saskatchewan that participated at the Western Hockey League (WHL) CUP in Calgary. This year’s team feature three (3) first round draft picks of the 2018 WHL Draft. Those players are Nolan Allan (Davidson) picked third overall by the Prince Albert Raiders, Cole Sillinger (Regina) picked eleventh overall by the Medicine Hat Tigers and Gabriel Klassen chosen nineteenth overall by the Portland Winterhawks.
Team staff for the Male Under-16 team is Joel Houseman (Director of Operations), Gordon Burnett (Head Coach), Devan Praught (Assistant Coach), Rod Dallman (Assistant Coach), Chris Beaudry (Video Coach), Bill Gibson (Head Scout), Kacey Moffat (Athletic Therapist) and Josh Houseman (Equipment Manager).
Men’s Ice Hockey was first introduced to the Canada Winter Games in 1967, it was in 1979 that Team Saskatchewan first participated on the boy’s side. The best result achieved by a Male Hockey team was gold in 1995. It was Patrick Marleau (Aneroid, SK) who scored the golden goal against the hosts, Team Alberta. Most recently, Saskatchewan’s Male Hockey program is coming off a 7th place finish at the 2015 Canada Winter Games.
This completes the selection process for Team Saskatchewan’s Female and Male programs. The selection process began back in Fall 2017 with Regional Camps and progressed to SaskFirst Tournaments, before finishing with Summer and Fall Camps.
The Canada Winter Games run February 15 to March 3 in Red Deer. The Male Hockey competition is from February 16 to 22 with Team Saskatchewan opening the preliminaries in Pool B against the hosts, Team Alberta. The Female Hockey competition follows on February 24 to March 2. Team Saskatchewan Women will open their tournament in Pool A, against a familiar opponent in Team Manitoba.
