Mercer Legacy Lives On
Today marks one year to the date of when the Saskatchewan Hockey Association’s Referee’s Division, the MJPS, Community of Moose Jaw and many friends and family lost a great mentor with the passing of Jason Mercer. The impact he had on officials in Saskatchewan has left a legacy and many powerful memories.
The Referee’s Division is excited to publish an announcement of another official award this season, which was renamed to honour Mercer.
A newly created plaque that features Mercer’s number 67 and a photo of him on the ice reffing was presented to Calvin Roseberry of Saskatoon. Roseberry was named the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League’s Official of the Year for the 2016-17 season.
Roseberry was presented with the award by SHA Referee-in-Chief Trevor Norum and SMAAAHL President Lloyd Friesen prior to game two of the league championship series in Tisdale Sunday.
Congratulations go out to Calvin for his work on the ice this season. The Referee’s Division would also like to express their appreciation for the SMAAAHL honouring Jason Mercer with renaming the award, similar to what the Prairie Junior Hockey League has done, in a way to honour someone who worked closely with both leagues.
