The SHA’s Referee Division is continuing with the award announcements for the 2016-17 season, and this week we would like to congratulate the Most Improved Officials from the four southern zones and the Hockey Canada award winner in this category.
The winner of the Hockey Canada Most Improved Official is Avery Dudley. Dudley is an 18-year-old female official in Swift Current. She has progressed from the Peewee house ranks through the Saskatchewan Bantam AA Hockey League and worked the semi-final of the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League this season. She also attended the Female SaskFirst program where she lines the A final and reffed the C final after an impressive weekend of officiating. Dudley is always eager to ask questions and is open to all coaching from supervisors and senior officials. Dudley has been officiating for seven seasons and has put in the time and effort to make her a very well deserving recipient of the Hockey Canada and Zone 3 Most Improved Official Award.
The Zone 1 Most Improved Official was Dylan Calvert. Calvert made huge strides with his officiating this season and was challenged to start at the lower levels and prove he was mature enough and ready to move up the leagues in his area around White City. He worked provincial games this season and attend the SaskFirst Bantam Regional Camp and is in line to get an opportunity at the SBAAHL next season. Calvert is a 17-year-old official, who has been at the job for six seasons.
Cody Hall was named the winner of the Zone 2 Most Improved Official. After a lengthy junior career that included both junior A and B he has worked his way up to officiate those leagues and was challenged by the SODM group this season and exceed expectations. Hall worked on the lines in the deciding games for the SMAAAHL, PJHL and SJHL this season. Despite still playing senior hockey he has made the commitment to moved up the officiating ranks as he will be starting his 13th season as an official in the fall in Regina.
In Zone 4, the winner of the Most Improved Official was Parker Ellert. The 23-year-old official from Melville worked 27 games this season in SODM leagues including the SJHL. Along with doing the elite leagues, Ellert was a big part of leading and developing officials in Melville, as he was a Director and Sr. Referee Scheduler with Melville Minor Hockey. Ellert has been officiating since 2006.
The SHA would like to again, congratulate this group of officials for their hard work, dedication and development as officials and is excited to see what next season brings for this group, and all officials, who showed great improvement in their development.
