Goaltender Development

FOCUSING ON FUNDAMENTAL & SKILL DEVELOPMENT

For the 2018-2019 hockey season, the Saskatchewan Hockey Association (SHA) has implemented a model for the development of grassroots goaltending in the province. The purpose of this Grassroots Goaltending Model is to give an action plan set out by the SHA to the Minor Hockey Association (MHA) and their local MHA goalie coach. The SHA will give the Action plans to all MHA goalie coaches at the November training session, this also gives the SHA’s Regional Mentors the opportunity to review the action plans set out for the year.

SASKATCHEWAN SYSTEM

  1.  Regional Master Coaches – Two (2)
  2.  Minor Hockey Goalie Coaches

We will have one (1) Regional Master Coach in the South who will be responsible for Zones 1-4 and one (1) in the North who will be responsible for Zones 5-8.

Both Regional Master Goalie Coaches will be responsible for working together to conduct one (1) coach clinic in each Region. After the conclusion of these two (2) coach clinics, the Regional Master Coach will act as a resource to the MHA Goalie Coaches in their region.

Below are responsibilities and qualifications set by the Saskatchewan Hockey Association. (Subject to change)

REGIONAL MASTER COACHES

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To train MHA Goalie Coaches and conduct goalie coaching clinics with in their Region which will be held November 4th in the South and November 5th in the North. A season wrap-up will also be held in Regina in April (TBD).
  • To train and develop goals and have an action plan that is approved by the SHA.
  • Be able to work with the MHAs and their goalie coaches.
  • To act as a resource for the MHA and their goalie coaches within their region.
  • Develop an MHA year-end wrap up training session, and discuss the actions plans from the season.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have completed Hockey Canada Level 2.
  • Submit a Criminal record check to SHA.
  • Ability to evaluate current programs to build on and improve areas of weakness.
  • Ability to lead groups and work with coaches of various ages and skill levels in grassroots
  • Understanding of the LTPD model for goalies at the Grassroots level.
  • Must have or obtain NCCP Facilitator Training & NCCP Coach Evaluator Training.

MINOR HOCKEY ASSOCIATION

GENERAL INFORMATION

  • The goal of the MHA is to endorse a goalie coach within their local Association.
  • Help with the coordination of the ice sessions (Example- Goalie Mondays, Shared Ice Practices etc).
  • The SHA suggests one (1) goalie coach per eight (8) teams.

MINOR HOCKEY ASSOCIATION GOALIE COACH

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Implement the action plans set out by the SHA.
  • Organize and attend MHA goalie sessions within your local MHA. (Example- Goalie Mondays, Shared Ice Practices etc).
  • Be a resource to your local MHA.
  • Attend training sessions in November and April.

QUALIFICATIONS/KNOWLEDGE

  • Ability to give as many players as possible the opportunity to play goal and help them develop.
  • Provide online reporting through the SHA website.
  • Goalie 1 trained.
  • Coach 2 level trained.
  • Respect in Sport.
  • Ability to identify, correct and demonstrate skills.
  • Must be organized and have excellent time management skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.

CONCLUSION

In order to improve the overall goaltending in the Province, the SHA along with the Regional Mentors are going to need ALL the MHAs to work together and help with the development of our goaltenders.
